Maribor

Maribor is a city, which is worth presenting and of course also visiting. It is a great holiday destination, as you can take part of different activities in the city or its surroundings, or just enjoy the peaceful old city center, walking along the river Drava or maybe visiting the Lent festival. There are many hotels, villas and suites in the city. From there you can see nearby hills of Pohorje, which attracts visitors in every part of the year.

Pohorje is a mountain chain in the vicinity of the city Maribor, which is the second largest city in Slovenia. The city Maribor is well developed and located among four capitals. Only about 100 kilometers western, there is the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, northern is the capital of Austria, Vienna, southern the Croatian capital Zagreb and eastern, there is Budapest. So the visitor can visit Maribor together with the cities around it or it can be a final destination of a visitor, who wants to spend peaceful or active vacation, especially if you also visit Pohorje.

Maribor is located on the river Drava, where you can ride a boat or smaller touristic ships. In the immediate vicinity of the city, there is an artificial island on Drava (Mariborski otok), where you can swim in a swimming pool. The city also has many cycle tracks, and you can also enjoy riding on many of them in the surroundings of the city.

The beat of Maribor increases at important events. Here is the home of the most successful Slovenian football club, NK Maribor. The stadium has been recently renewed, its capacity expanded and it is fully covered. Nearby Pohorje annually hosts the best skiers in the world, who compete for the world cup in slalom and giant slalom at the famous event Golden Fox.

The part of the city by the river is named Lent. It hosts one of the biggest cultural festivals in Europe, which takes place every year for around one month. The festival Lent is a traditional festival, visited by more and more foreign visitors. Also guests of the festival are known groups of musicians, theatre performers and other artists. So Maribor is becoming a city of culture. Lent also has the oldest vine in the world. It is more than 400 years old, and it still fruits every year, and from its grapes, special wine is made. Also one of the almost 40 kilometers long cycle trails was named after the vine, it is called Pot Stare trte.

You can only walk in Maribor, or go shopping. As a tourist, you won’t get bored, especially if the weather is nice and there is any event going on. Even though Pohorje attracts the most visitors in this part of Slovenia, Maribor is sure worth visiting.
