Good warm meals, followed by a glass of fine wine and a dessert are a part of every single day. If you visit Pohorje, Rogla, city Maribor or surroundings, you will not be short of any of these enjoyments. We are talking about such special culinary enjoyments that you can’t miss them, if you are staying in this region.
Great cuisine is a specialty of Pohorje and its surrounding area. Particularly soups, meat dishes, wines and special types of desserts are very delicious in this region.
They know more than 100 different receipts for soups, most of them are vegetable soups.
The most known are potato soup, apple soup, sour bean soup and soup with dumplings. If your destination is Areh or Bolfenk above Maribor or if you are a sports fan and heading to Rogla, a warm soup will be good for you, no matter which part of the year it is. If you came to Pohorje, you definitely have to try at least one soup.
Besides soups, you should also try different stews, fried cabbage with ground beef, potato cake with walnuts and in many places you can try venison. Of course this doesn’t mean that you will meet deer all around Pohorje or other significant places like Rogla, Areh and Bolfenk, but venison is a part of many delicious lunches you can eat in Pohorje.
However, most of the main meals are combined with pork. One of the specialties is Savinja stomach. Pohorje is located right above Savinja, so this proximity means that you can enjoy their known specialties for snack or appetizer before lunch.
St. Martin’s roast goose, which is made on 11th of November, the feast of happy Martin, when must is turned to wine, is known all around viniferous regions. Pohorje is no exception, since the locals produce delicious wines on these hills.
You should not forget to taste some desserts, for example pies with different stuffing or genuine homemade cakes, like tarragon, curd and others. They’re all delicious!
There also many wine cellars around viniferous areas of Pohorje, so you can taste some different wines in local restaurants. Wine is being produced already from the middle ages, so it is not surprising, that the oldest vine in the Europe is in Maribor. It grows in the famous Lent at the front of the inn Stara trta, and is old around 400 years. Also Rogla has many vineyards at the foothills.
Especially in the direction of Maribor, there are aromatic sorts of white wines, like white and gray Pinot, Riesling, Furmint, Chardonnay and green Silvaner, the most popular among youth is Traminer. Special attention is paid to wines of the highest quality. You should definitely taste ice or strawberry wines. If you visit Pohorje for more than one day, you should definitely try more sort of wine, of course accompanied with selected food.
